Numbers in Japanese 0 – 99 : Easy Guide
Knowing basic Japanese numbers will certainly be useful when you are travelling in Japan: telling the time, communicating how many rice balls you want to buy in a shop etc…
Here is the super easy way to learn Japanese numbers 0 – 10.
0
zelo
… that was easy.
ichi (itchy!)
ni (knee)
san (sun)
yon (yawn)
go (go!)
loku (lock)
nana
hachi (hatch)
kyu (queue)
jyu (ju(ice))
Worried that you still might forget? Go ahead and write them down on a piece of paper!
Worried that you might lose that piece of paper? No problem, wear them on a T-shirt!
Once you learnt these basic Japanese numbers, saying numbers up to 99 will be just a walk in the park.
20 ni-jyu, 30 san-jyu, 40 yon-jyu, 50 go-jyu, 60 loku-jyu, 70 nana-jyu, 80 hachi-jyu, 90 kyu-jyu
Then…
21 ni-jyu-ichi, 22 ni-jyu-ni, 23 ni-jyu-san…
you get the pattern.
Please note, the official Romanised Japanese does not use L but R, but I am using L instead of R in this list as the Japanese /r/ is closer to the English L most of the time. We, Japanese are notorious for having trouble with Ls and Rs, but that’s a discussion for another time…
