3 places to eat in Jerusalem

Hummus Ben Sira

I had cauliflower hummus in pita bread (20 NIS). One of the creamiest hummus I’ve ever tasted and the combination with slightly charred cauliflower was just perfect. I regret not having their falafels, they looked so good…. They had an English menu and people were friendly.

Aricha Sabich

We were in Machane Yehuda market. We just wanted to sit down and have beer, but found the market a little pricey. We found this place by chance just across the street from the market. We were initially just having beer and relaxing, but soon realised how popular this tiny place was. People just kept coming and going to buy this … thing in pita bread. The menu was written only in Hebrew, so I asked a local couple who were sitting next to us what they (and everyone else except us) were having. It was sabich, a Jewish Iraqi sandwich filled with fried aubergine, boiled eggs, salad and sauces. ‘It’s great. You just have to have it!’ the couple said. So I joined the queue and such welcome I had from other customers who were either in the queue with me or by the counter already eating; ‘You must have it, it’s the best!’ ‘He (pointing one of the staff) is the sabich master.’ All staff members were friendly and attentive also, the place had such a nice atmosphere!

And the sabich was delicious, all filings were in perfect harmony in terms of both taste and texture. 19 NIS which was really reasonable in the area. Just bear in mind it is a tiny place with only a few tables, we were there around 5PM.

Maoz Falafel

Another good place I found by chance. I was strolling around the area near the hotel in search for dinner. I saw this small fast food place where people stood around, eating, chatting; there was a really warm cozy air about it. I walked over and noticed many people were eating/buying this massive foot long wrap of some kind. I asked one of the customers if they had an English menu. The girl said: ‘no, but I can help you.’ The foot long wrap was a laffa bread with falafels, salad, chips and sauces. The large one was 20 NIS and small (half) 11 NIS. I thought the large laffa maybe, well… too large, so went for a small one, but now I know I should’ve gone for the large one because it was so delicious! The girl ordered my wrap for me. The man behind the counter didn’t speak much English, but was super friendly and even gave me a sample falafel whilst I was waiting! I really liked the laffa bread, it’s more chewy and a little sweeter, yet felt lighter than pita and matched perfectly with the crunchy fluffy falafels. I think they do shewarma also.
